What is a pandemic?

An epidemic of a disease that spreads across a large geographic area (such as several countries or continents) and affects a large proportion of the population is known as a Pandemic.

What is Covid 19?

The COVID-19 pandemic, also known as the coronavirus pandemic, is a global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by coronavirus 2 that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-2). In December 2019, the unique virus was discovered in an epidemic in the Chinese city of Wuhan, and attempts to contain it there failed, allowing it to spread around the world (Wikipedia, 2022).

The Impact of Covid 19 on Human Resource Management

Acceleration of digitization processes is one of the economic effects of the worldwide pandemic (Covid-19). Companies must increasingly use digital channels to provide employees with fast access to positions. Human Resource Management is critical in assisting organizations in navigating through the drastic changes brought on by the pandemic lockdown.

The study provides a picture of the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on employment in Sri Lanka across a variety of sectors, with a particular focus on the impact on women's and men's ability to remain employed and work productively (International Finance Corporation, 2022).

 

Negative impacts of covid 19 on HRM in Sri Lanka

  • Reduction of salary of the employees as well as their additional benefits.
  • The employees will seek new income -earning alternatives to compensate for the family's overall income decrease.
  • Employees unable to cover their utility expenses , house hold expenses and  Repayments on a car or other personal loans.
  • Companies faced a negative impact on revenue, negative impact on orders or previously agreed contracts.
  • Employees were temporarily redeployed to a different job position or location or will be in the next three months.
  • Lower productivity of the employees due to travel restrictions and poor internet connections.
  • Employees Concerns about having the freedom to balance work and family obligations after they return to work.
  • Employees were distracted due to health, stress or mental well-being.

 

Recommendations

  •      Create and implement policies that allow for significant flexibility in the workplace. 

  • .     Assist employees, particularly women, in gaining access to the technology they require to be effective. 

  • .      Assess your transportation needs and consider providing employee transportation.

  • .      Assist with mental health and wellness.

  6. A very good write up. While people were advising and entrusting us to move towards digitalization, covid 19 forced us to move towards digitalization. While there are lot of positive aspects, there’re negatives in moving on to digitalization in terms of HRM. The prime component of HR being networking with the employees will drastically fall down due to digitalization.

    What can do aligning with HRM?
    Most of company’s use digital platform & work from home. But industrial organizations much more difficulties remotely working.
    HRM more attention & planning very essential about solutions and suggestion to employees & company.

  13. You have discussed about a timely topic. Most of the IT companies have changed there working mode to WFH culture which is very effective. HRM Teams are also adapting to the WFH culture. But it is not practical in some other fields like manufacturing where the employees are directly and manually involved in getting the outcome.
